The introduction of State Key Laboratory for Manufacturing System Engineering

The State Key Laboratory for Manufacturing System Engineering was established in 1995 and was working in this time. It is responsible to integrate modern information technology, engineering management with manufacturing technology and take full advantages of the innovation achievements of computers, telecommunication, automatization, engineering management and other fields in order to develop both the new processes and the new technologies in manufacturing industry. It mainly supports three national key disciplines which belong to XJTU that are machinery manufacturing and automatization, system engineering and management science and engineering discipline. The primary research directions of this laboratory are advanced manufacturing in theory and technology, manufacturing information and manufacturing system engineering, the control and integration of manufacturing system and facilities and the management and decision in advanced manufacturing system. Recently, it has formed the domestic leading research directions which are material manufacturing technology (3D print), micro nano imprint and sensor manufacturing, high speed and high accuracy manufacturing, high precision measurement, diagnose and detection in mechanical failure, service type of manufacturing pattern.

Now this laboratory has 62 research people, which include 51 professors and 11 associate professors, 15 technical support staff. We are so proud of our outstanding members and especially for the research people are famous in external and internal. In the recent 6 years, it has taken more than 230 research subjects, received many awards in domestic, authorized more than 400 patents of inventions, published 23 monographs and delivered more than 1000 international periodical papers.

Laboratory has carried out a great number of academic communications with internal and external. It participated in “Nano fabrication” joint laboratory included in National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and cooperated with UK by “micro fabrication and nano testing”. It is setting up a international joint laboratory which is named “micro fabrication and testing technique international joint laboratory” with the University of New South Wales.

Sate Key Laboratory for Manufacturing System Engineering covers more than 70 facilities which have passed CAM certificate. And it established appointment system on Internet in order to service the public in need.

The key laboratory of education ministry for modern design and rotor-bearing system

The key laboratory of education ministry for modern design and rotor-bearing system was approved to be established in 1999 in Xi’an Jiaotong University. It grew out of the research group founded in 1958 and started to cultivate graduate students in 1963, followed by the set-up of the mechanics doctoral discipline in 1984. The lab was supported by the State Education Commission in 1994, and approved by the State in 1999, as well as the following evaluations by the education ministry in 2002 and 2007. The lab includes 31 fixed research members and owns a building space of 3000 square meters. It is engaged in the research of modern design, rotor-bearing system dynamics, engineering tribology and nanosurface tribology. The lab has become the characteristic base meeting the needs of the country in rotor bearing system-engineering tribology system and facing the international forefront of scientific research in nanosurface tribology. Now, Prof. Wei Chen holds the post of director of the lab, and the head of academic committee is Prof. Jianbin Luo, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Since 2007, The lab has been intensively involved in fundamental research within the scope of taking charge of two 973 projects, three 973 sub-projects, three sub-projects of National Science and Technology Major Project, ten 863 projects, one major project of NSFC, one cultivation project of NSFC, 22 general and four Youth projects of NSFC, nine international cooperation projects, 127 large domestic enterprises cooperation projects as well as 18 domestic military projects. 31 test-beds were developed with independent innovation. The lab holds a total scientific research funds of 51.17 million yuan and has been awarded one first prize of Science and Technology Achievement on ministry level, two second prizes and two third prizes as well. The lab owns 38 patents for invention and 20 software copyrights and has published 286 papers, 90 of which were cited by SCI, and eight monographs including one English literature. There have been five post doctors, 27 doctors and 247 masters graduated from the lab. The lab has hosted one international biotribology conference, two international bilateral symposiums between Xi’an Jiaotong University and Nagoya University on tribology and one national symposium on bearing, and participated in scientific communications frequently all over the world. More than 50 members has attended international academic meetings, and eight Ph.Ds were sent to research institutes such as Harvard University and University of California, San Diego in America, University of Leeds in England, the University of Tokyo and Tohoku University in Japan as visiting scholars for 1-2 years, establishing international cooperation platforms.

The lab is so far becoming a key centre which is able to carry out national high level fundamental researches and application studies, and to accomplish highly qualified scientific achievements in the field of rotor-bearing system dynamics and tribology. The lab also aims at an international research centre oriented to international academic leading edge, with the capabilities of producing top excellent talents, conducting prospective and strategic researches and promoting academic interactions.
